Notice of Repudiating Debts of Wives

Hilary Sargent of the Boston Globe writes in her article, that for over 300 years newspapers published advertisements by men publicly announcing their wives had left them and would no longer ‘be responsible for her debts.’ These advertisements began appearing as early as 1656 and continued into the 1980s – typically found under “Special Notices”.

Female Clubs, Organizations, and Sisterhoods in Ohio

Starting in 2003, the YWCA donated more than one million photographs, publication pages, and rolls of microfilm to Smith College’s Sophia Smith Collection of Women’s History at Northhampton in Massachusetts. Thanks to a grant from Council on Library Information and Resources these records have been digitalized and made accessible for researchers – for more information visit their website.
